Gun men kidnaps; Students of ABU Zaria.

The gunmen who kidnapped students of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, along the Kaduna-Abuja highway on Sunday, November 15, have demanded a cumulative sum of N270 million as ransom.

DailyTrust reports that a student of the university, Dickson Oko, who was able to escape being kidnapped, claimed that the kidnappers had reached out to the families of the kidnapped students and are demanding N30 million ransom on each.

Oko, who sustained a gunshot wound during the attack, said 12 of them were on the bus but nine students were kidnapped. The students were on their way to the French Village in Lagos for their language immersion programme when the bus they were travelling in got attacked by gunmen who blocked both lanes of the Akilubu-Gidan Busa axis on the highway and opened fire on motorists.

The driver of the bus, Mohammed Nurrudeen, who escaped unhurt, said they were trapped sometime around 3:10 pm at Busa, a few kilometres after Akilubu.

“Immediately they came on the road, the armed men opened fire. They shot two of the students in the bus and we noticed that they had erected a roadblock behind us and another in front. There was another roadblock mounted on the other lane. So the only thing I could do was to stop.”

Nurudeen said with gunshots directed at their bus and other vehicles ahead of them, he suggested to the students to brace up and run, adding

“I opened the door and crawled into the grass. The gunshots were everywhere; the person on the passenger’s seat in front also came down even though he was shot. I crossed onto the other lane. I never knew I would survive because there were gunshots directed at me.”

He said he saw the gunmen open fire at a Gulf car with people in it. He said the attack, which scared him, aided his decision to run.

“I can’t say how many people were killed but what scared me was how they opened fire at the Gulf car even though it had stopped and there were people in it. But the bandits opened fire and kept shooting. That was when I decided that it was better they killed me while on the run than face a gruesome fate in the vehicle,” he added.

Mohammed, however, explained that when he returned to the roadside, soldiers had arrived and engaged the bandits in a shootout, adding that he went to Katari Police Station to make a statement as soon as the situation calmed down.

“While making the statement, one of my passengers, she had a baby, came and said that she couldn’t believe that I survived because they all thought I had been hit by bullets.

She was trembling and told the police that when the soldiers came, the bandits formed two groups; one went with several kidnapped victims into the bush, while the other bandits stayed back to engage the security agents in an attempt to distract them.”

According to Mohammed, two other students had been found, including the student on the passenger’s seat who sustained a gunshot wound, adding that “the woman confirmed that the bandits left with nine of the students while we took the three who escaped to the hospital and I came back to Kaduna with them on Monday.”

A female relative of one of the kidnapped students told the Voice of America (VOA) Hausa Service that the kidnappers have reached out to the family demanding for N30 million per student. She pleaded with the kidnappers to have mercy and release the victims, saying they were only students.

“Spending time with parents help children build bonds. When kids are not able to connect with other people, it’s because they are being neglected, especially at home. This often causes them to act out and it can also negatively affect their academic performance,” she concluded.

further stated that some of the factors that can increase the risk of child abuse include unhealthy family relationships, exposure to alcohol or hard drugs, unemployment and neighbours unwillingness to intervene.

CAN protest in Abuja

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has held protests in the capital city and parts of the country to call the government’s attention to the rising spate of killings across the nation.

The Christian group had earlier called on all Christians across the country to embark on a ‘prayer walk’ on Sunday to protest the gruesome killing of the CAN Chairman in Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Lawan Andimi, by Boko Haram terrorists.

Although the federal government has condemned the beheading of the cleric, the CAN said the government has not done enough to protect Christians.

CAN President, Samson Ayokunle, during a briefing with journalists in Abuja on Thursday said the prayer walk was aimed at using prayers to curb the activities of terrorists and criminals who have been orchestrating killings across the country.

He also said (in)actions by the federal government had given such criminals Thu latitude to carry our crime unchallenged.

He also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to overhaul the security apparatus in the country to curb the killings.

“Government should order the arrest of the leadership of the Miyetti Allah for sponsoring and perpetuating crime of Nigeria and prosecute them for all the killings in Southern Kaduna, Benue, Plateau and Taraba states, among others.

“Also, government should publish names of all kingpins of the terrorists in detention and those who are being prosecuted,” he was quoted by online medium, Sahara Reporters.

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, (RCCG) Enoch Adeboye, in a televised broadcast to parishes across the country had urged parishioners to take part in the protest as CAN has directed.

Mr Adeboye also took part in the march in Lagos.

Newsmen= also understand the marches were held in many states by churches under CAN’s purview.

Insecurity

As Nigerians, we feel very insecure in our own country. Terrorism, inflation, corruption, injustice, recession – all these words can be heard coming from your TV screens! It causes panic in the hearts of citizens! How did it get this bad? What can you do? We have the answer! Take a look at our Top 10 causes of insecurity in Nigeria!Ad

Top 10 Sources of Insecurity

1. Unemployment

The overwhelming unemployment rate in Nigeria is capable of causing panic! It`s especially obvious when it comes to Nigerian youths. According to the statistics, every tenth young citizen of Nigeria is officially unemployed. Another statistic provided by the NBS shows that unemployment rate in Nigeria has risen to 14%. It means that Nigeria does not get about 19% of its GDP!

It`s the responsibility of the government to create new jobs. The President of Nigeria has already announced new reforms which should help with this task. Still, there are no results yet.

2. Corruption

The Transparency International places Nigeria on the top of the list for most corrupt countries in the world! Corrupted Nigerian politicians has become a turn off for international investors. Once Vanguard publicized an article where it tried to explain the corruption in Nigeria. According to this article, there is no real politician that’s wants to “kill” corruption in Nigeria.

Corruption has already become a part of life in Nigeria. The Federal Government can’t show us one real politician interested in battling corruption in the country.

3. Imbalance

Different parts of Nigeria have a different speeds of development. Due to this, the oil-rich regions of the country feel disturbed when the Federal Government use their oil and do not develop their society. People of these regions feel cheated because of that. They want to take justice into their hands. That`s why they vandalize oil pipelines!

It`s one of the causes of insecurity in Nigeria. The Federal Government should deal with this problem. The only way is to balance the development of all regions of the country.

4. Weak Judicial System

The Weak Judicial System causes insecurity in Nigeria. People feel insecure when criminals and terrorists can go free. A lot of evil-minded people feel that money can buy freedom in Nigeria. The corrupt system proves this line of thought.

Rich people can buy their freedom in Nigeria. Poor people do not feel secure because of that! The Judicial System in Nigeria should be changed. There may be only one answer to that – transparency! The Federal Government should to make sure a judge’s decision and power is transparent.

5. “Open” borders of Nigeria

Nigeria has borders that are poorly guarded. Insurgents from other countries can infiltrate Nigeria with no problem. This situation is especially dangerous in the North East. The Federal Government of Nigeria can`t provide enough troops to secure the borders.

Porous coastal borders are the main cause of terrorism in Nigeria. The Federal Government should increase the number of troops that guard borders. It`s also possible to train people to protect their regions from insurgents.

6. High Influx of Arms

Smugglers use porous coastal borders of Nigeria to sell arms! The Corruption system and weak judicial system only helps smugglers to sell even more guns. They provide pistols, shotguns, rifles, assault rifles, grenades, and explosives! These guns are used against the people and military forces.

The Federal Government of Nigeria understands this situation and tries to find a solution. Still, it`s a complex problem. The government may need to ask help from residents of affected areas to patrol the borders together!

7. Narcotics

Narcotic trafficking is one of the causes of insecurity in Nigeria. Criminal groups are involved in smuggling of illegal substances to Europe, Asia, South Africa and North America. Nigerian gangs are one of the largest distributors of opium in the world!

Nigerians should fight this criminal trafficking! It`s not affecting just the country. The Federal Government should initiate cooperation with other countries to fight criminals! Opening an international investigation on the matter and creating groups responsible for this will help.

8. Slavery in Nigeria

The Walk Free Foundation of Global Slavery reports that a lot of Nigerians are trapped in human trafficking. For instance, women in Nigeria can be tricked to migrate to other regions in the country. They hope to find good jobs, but, instead of promised jobs, they sell their bodies for money. Some of them can be even sold to foreign brothels.

The situation with human trafficking and forced labor in Nigeria is horrible. Nigerians should fight these crimes. You must make a report if you ever witness human trafficking or slavery. Do not be indifferent to this problem. People are born free and must live free!

9. Criminal Situation in Nigeria

For the last few years, Nigerians have been victims of robberies, which sometimes happens in daylight. Organized criminal gangs take over the streets of Nigeria. People do not feel safe when walking in the streets. Europe also feels the criminal situation in Nigeria. The “419 Scams” tricked a lot of Europeans and Americans to part with money!

This situation is unique to Nigeria. The corrupted government officials can`t provide help to Nigerians to fight with these criminals. The Federal Government should pay attention to this problem!

10. Terrorist Threat

Terrorism in Nigeria is not a new problem. Boko Haram and Niger Delta Avengers are two main terrorist organizations that cause the most damage to Nigeria. They do not wish to surrender to the government. They just want to cause terror!

The Federal Government of Nigeria keeps fighting with terrorists. Nigerian soldiers die every day for their country. Now, it`s the matter of time before the terrorists will be eliminated.

Sources of Insecurity – It`s Time to Act!

Nigeria is a wonderful country! Unfortunately, it faces a lot of problems today! Do not be indifferent to these problems! You can help your country!
